Another major development in Judo’s history was the inclusion of women. The first Women’s World Judo Championships were held in New York City in 1980, and women’s Judo became a demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
The 1950s and 1960s were key decades for Judo’s growth. In 1956, the first World Judo Championships took place in Tokyo, with 21 countries participating.
Judo faced significant challenges during World War II. In 1945, the Allied forces, led by U.S. General Douglas MacArthur, banned Judo in Japan, viewing it as too militaristic.
Professor Jigoro Kano had a dream to spread Judo across the world, and he believed the Olympic Games were the key.
